Sustaining Member Test


To pass this exam the member shall demonstrate practical knowledge consistent with the non-emergency activities of the company, and shall demonstrate knowledge of basic station safety and hazard recognition consistent with OSHA requirements.

This test may be administered by any officer or other designee, but the Chief must make the final determination of satisfactory completion.

The sustaining member candidate will be able to complete the following without any assistance:

  1. Briefly explain the roles performed by the Varna captains, chief officers and board members. Explain the roles performed by the dispatchers and the county coordinator.

  2. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of all the VFD General Orders and Operating Procedures as they apply to Sustaining Members.

  3. Briefly describe the contents of the Varna Blue Book.

  4. Describe the general hazards in and around the station. Where can information on hazardous material be found? As a member of the VVFC, what are your rights with regard to these materials?
