By passage of this exam the member shall demonstrate practical knowledge consistent
with the basic emergency activities of the company and shall demonstrate knowledge
of on-scene safety, personal protective equipment, response safety, tool and equipment
safety, and SCBA operation and safety consistent with OSHA requirements.
This test may be administered by any officer or other designee,
but the Chief must make the final determination of satisfactory
completion. Candidates shall be given
three opportunities to retest.
The Probationary Fire Fighter candidate must do the following
without any assistance:
- Correctly don all turnout gear issued to you.
- Describe the proper protective equipment to be used for each of the following calls
or activities:
- EMS
- Suspected TB patient
- MVA
- Fire
- Operating small engines
- Extrication
- Operating a pump on a truck
- CO call
- CO call with elevated readings on a gas meter
- Raising a ladder during truck check
- Loading hose
- Interior fire fighting
- Brush fire
- Dumpster fire
- Demonstrate how to change a cylinder on a Scott 2.2 SCBA
while it is being worn by another person.
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the operation of the mobile
(truck and chief), portable (MT-1000 and HT-50) and the base station radios.
- Explain the correct actions to take if you are the first person
on the scene of a(n):
- Motor vehicle accident
- Heart call
- Possible head/spinal injury
- Chimney fire
- Structure fire
- Hazardous materials incident
- Grass fire
- Be able to locate quickly the basic equipment
on all five pieces of apparatus and around the station.
- Drive using the most efficient route to 10 addresses located in the VVFC
protection district chosen by the examining officer.
- Describe proper response to an emergency in your personal vehicle and in
an emergency vehicle and the traffic laws and VVFC policies that pertain
to that response.
