Emergency Medical Service Test


Part 1

It is expected that Part 1 will be completed in a maximum of two sessions. One session will be for questions 1-7, and one for questions 8-9. Once a session is started, it should be completed during that testing session. Only a chief officer can grant exceptions to this policy.

The EMS member candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills without any assistance:

  1. Explain what equipment should be carried in to all patients.

  2. Explain what equipment should be carried in addition to equipment listed above at a(n):
    • MVA,
    • Heart call,
    • Possible head/spinal injury
    • Open bleeding call
    • Ankle twist
    • "Band-aid" call
    • Wilderness rescue call.

  3. Demonstrate how to set up and administer oxygen to a patient. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the oxygen cascade system for refilling O2 cylinders.

  4. Demonstrate how to set up and use the portable suction equipment using both battery and residential (AC) power.

  5. Explain and demonstrate correct actions to take to control external bleeding.

  6. Properly complete a Prehospital Care Report. A scenario will be given.

  7. While wearing full turnout gear, correctly check out, don, and begin to breathe air from a Scott 2.2 SCBA within two minutes. (This portion of the test shall be waived for those individuals who may not use SCBA under OSHA standards. This question may also be waived if the candidate has successfully completed the examination required to become an Active Fire Fighter.)

  8. Perform a thorough truck check on 1942 and 1943.

  9. Demonstrate how to use the mobile radios on 1942 and 1943 properly.

Part 2

It is expected that Part 2 of this test will be completed in a single session. The EMS member candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills without any assistance:
  1. Demonstrate how to stabilize a vehicle. This should include a discussion or demonstration of the use of step chocks, handyman jacks, and ratchet winches.

  2. Set up, start and demonstrate how to use the Amkus power tool (jaws) cutters, spreaders, and rams. (This question may be waived if the candidate has successfully completed the examination required to become an Active Fire Fighter.)

  3. Demonstrate how to set up and use the air bags, air chisel, and air filled water rescue hose. Set the regulator pressure properly. (This question may be waived if the candidate has successfully completed the examination required to become an Active Fire Fighter.)

  4. Demonstrate the setup of the portable generator and use the generator to power both a portable light and an electric reciprocating saw.

  5. Demonstrate the use of the water rescue equipment, including the rescue pilot line and rope, throw lines, and personal floatation devices.
